Destination Guide for Vega Baja - Puerto Rico Destinations
Vega Baja was originally known as La Ciudad del Naranjal (The City of Orchards) for its cultivation of citrus. Vega Baja has also been known as the capital ecotourism city in Puerto Rico, for its lush lagoon Tortuguero, its abundant flora and beautiful fauna.
The area of modern Vega Baja was once known as Sebuco, with a time line that goes back 2,300 years. Upon the arrival of the Spanish, the town was established with 200 acres of land donated by Don Manuel Negron Bentitez. Around the time of the 19th century, Vega Baja's economy became based on the cultivation of oranges and sugar cane.
Nestled in between Vega Baja and Manati you will find one of the world's most nature filled Lagoons named Laguna Tortuguero. This sweet water lagoon is of major ecological importance to Puerto Rico, with many interesting species of plants and animals.
