PuertoRicoDestinations.com- Bioluminescent Bay's Of Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico Bioluminescenct bays- information & tours

"What is bioluminescence"? Bioluminescence occurs within live microscopic organisms usually a plankton within Puerto Rico's bay's. The most common named "pyrhodinium-bahamense" or "dinoflagellates", by the mixing of 2 chemicals; one protein and the other an enzyme by the names luciferen and luciferase.

These two when combined create the worlds most efficient form of light known today to man as bioluminescence and easily is mistaken with 'phosphorescence', which we know is a synthetic effect created by man which commonly occurs within glow sticks. Same two chemicals are within glow sticks and these dinoflagellates. One is with the exception that man did not part take in combining these two chemicals in any way.

Vieques Bio bay - has become very popular amongst some of the worlds most fascinating natural wonders. Yearly, the Bio-Bay attracts people from massive multitudes of cultures around the world. It is perhaps one of the best life changing experiences you can ever encounter from mother nature. Take a kayak guided nature tour, or jump aboard an electric pontoon boat and get ready for the experience of a life time with stars above and stars below in a magical bioluminescent bay surrounded by a mangrove forest in the beautiful island of Vieques, Puerto Rico within the Caribbean.

Puerto Rico, is home to a variety of bioluminescent bays but none is as astonishing as the bioluminescent bay of Vieques, Puerto Rico, Puerto Mosquito Bay, or as many know it the " Bio-Bay". This is where the microscopic organism called pyrodinium bahamense is at a concentration from 500,000 to 700,000, organisms per gallon of water. These create an amazing glow by combining two chemical enzymes luciferin and luciferase to create what is considered a cold light also todays most efficient form of light 'bioluminescence'.
